The Brooklyn Dodgers

Last month, mainstream media released a horrifying story in which a group of teenagers allegedly raped a young woman in Brooklyn.

As reported in The Washington Post, the 18-year-old victim and her father were at a playground shortly after 9 p.m. Five men approached them, and one of them demanded the father to leave at gunpoint.

Once he left, the men proceeded to rape the woman.

The police said in a statement that descriptions of the suspects were not immediately available, but they later retrieved a surveillance video of the five guys entering a bodega before the alleged attack.

Mateo Gomez, an attendant at Laida Deli, said that the video was from his store. He recognized the suspects and claimed that they sometimes came in and stole food. And he gave us this telling, damning quote:

“They’re bad boys.”

Thanks, Mateo.

People were initially really angry. And why wouldn’t they be? Five teenagers supposedly threatened to kill a man if he didn’t leave them with his daughter so that they could rape her.

And there was video footage of them laughing a joking in a store moments before that alleged attack.

But that month-old story took a grossly unexpected turn this week when people actually started asking questions. Like,

Why was an 18-year-old woman out with her father at night on a playground?

Was there really a gun? Was there really a forced sexual encounter?

I commend NYPD for believing a woman who claims she was raped, because too often do women try to come forward, only to be dismissed as “crazy” or a liar while the perpetrator walks free.

But…they were soon presented with some more evidence.

According to the Post, cellphone video evidence suggested the woman had consensual sex with the suspects. And that’s not all.

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said that the father had been “engaging in sexual conduct” with his daughter at the start of the incident.

Hopefully I wasn’t losing you, but I know you’re locked in now.

Some people, including the suspects’ attorney, drew parallels between the original case and the 1989 case of “The Central Park Five,” wherein five juveniles brutally raped a jogger. One might recall Donald Trump’s reaction to that story in the New York papers:

The alleged attackers were all convicted and sentenced to between five and fifteen years in prison. Finally, in 2002, another man came forward and confessed to the rape.

The convicted men were exonerated with a $40 million settlement, so I guess that’s all water under the Brooklyn Bridge.

So here’s what we’re working with now. The story collapsed in on itself partly because the father and daughter gave the authorities inconsistent accounts.

At first, they said the teenagers came up to them wielding a gun and demanded that the father leave. The daughter told investigators that when her father went to get the police, the suspects forced her to have sex with at least one of them and perform oral sex on two others.

But when investigators interviewed the teens, they asserted that there was no gun and that the woman had willingly had sex.

According to the Post, the teenagers’ lawyers came up with cellphone videos that suggested a consensual encounter.

AND THEN

The teens told the police that when they came upon the father and daughter in the park, the two of them were having sex.

AND

They joined in.

I

The videoed conversation itself hasn’t been released. Or, if it has been, I don’t have it. But The New York Times reported the dialogue within the footage that suggested the upcoming sex-ing.

This is by far the best part. Ready?

One man: “She said yeah.”

Other man: “If you said yeah, it’s lit, like you know what I mean. I could tell you a freak.”

THE WOMAN APPARENTLY SAID YES TO THE SEX, AND ONE OF THEM RESPONDED BY SAYING, “IT’S LIT.”

The police then confronted the father and daughter, who ended up admitting that there was no gun. The daughter also admitted that the gangbang was consensual.

And, according to the Times, the father and daughter also admitted to drinking and having sex with each other.

So…charges were dropped.

They aren’t even doing anything about the incest, because the daughter simply would not cooperate for any prosecutions against him for anything.

Oh, by the way, here’s a photo of one of the suspects, 17-year-old Travis Beckford.

Here we have him holding up the sign which usually means “West Side,” even though Brooklyn is about as far east as a person can get in this country.

Now, I don’t know why the woman was having sex with her own dad any more than I know why they were doing it at 9:00 on a playground. But some suggest that the woman is troubled from a past in foster care.

Scene:

A woman is in the park at night with her father, having sex with him.

A group of teenagers approach and ask to get in on the action.

She agrees.

Cumulatively, a woman had sex in the park at night with several men, one of whom is her dad.

And the authorities ended up being able to do zero things about it.

If there is a lesson here, I’m still trying to figure it out. But for now, I’ll go with the idea that without evidence, your information is insufficient.

(This is not to say that you should not take a rape victim’s word for it. Of course you should. But evidence is still essential to any information ever.)

Imagine if those teenagers were sentenced to death.

In any case, especially investigative ones, you cannot decide on action until you have all of the evidence.

You never know what sort of twisted nonfiction you’ll uncover.

we’re all human.
